Thomas Young (theologian)
Thomas Young (c. 1587–1655) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister and theologian, resident in England and a member of the Westminster Assembly. He was the major author of the Smectymnuus group of leading Puritan churchmen. He was also Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, and is known as the tutor to John Milton from the age of about ten. Life He was born in Perthshire, his father William Young being a vicar. He studied at St Andrews University, graduating M.A. in 1606. He then moved south to England. In London, from before 1612, he worked as a teaching assistant to Thomas Gataker. He tutored Milton, possibly from 1618 to 1620 or 1622, and continued to correspond with him. He then took a position in Hamburg, as minister to English merchants there, returning to England in 1628. Between 1628 and 1655 Young was vicar at the church of St Peter and St Mary in Stowmarket and his portrait hangs on the south wall of the church nave. Thomas Crane Young (February 28, 1858 - March 2, 1934) was an American architect.''New York Times'' (March 3, 1934), p. 13. He was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. His father was an officer in the Civil War in the 14th Wisconsin regiment. The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan before Young left school. He worked for the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad and then obtained a scholarship to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After two years he went to Europe to study at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and at Heidelberg University, after which he took a job in Boston for the architectural firms of Van Brunt & Howe and E. M. Wheelwright. He joined in business with William S. Eames in St. Louis, forming the form Eames and Young. Thomas Young Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (13 June 177310 May 1829) was a British polymath who made notable contributions to the fields of Visual perception, vision, light, solid mechanics, energy, physiology, language, harmony, musical harmony, and Egyptology. He was instrumental in the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, specifically the Rosetta Stone. Young has been described as "The Last Man Who Knew Everything". His work influenced that of William Herschel, Hermann von Helmholtz, James Clerk Maxwell, and Albert Einstein. Young is credited with establishing Christiaan Huygens' wave theory of light, in contrast to the corpuscular theory of Isaac Newton. Thomas Young (developer)
Thomas Young (c. 1650 – ?) was an English woodcarver and property developer, best known for Kensington Square. It is thought that he was born in Devon. Young was apprenticed to a joiner and woodcarver, and was admitted to the Joiners' Company as a freeman in 1670, at the age of about 20. In 1685, he acquired 14 acres of land in Kensington which he sought to develop, and as he later described it in 1701, "did sett out and appoint a considerable part thereof to be built into a large Square of large and substantial Houses fit for ye Habitacion of persons of good Worth and Quality, with Courts and Yards before and Gardens lying backwards". This was Kensington Square. From 1692 onwards, the central garden was laid out. Young attempted to develop Kensington Square alone, but had financial problems, which led him to sell plots to other developers, and to borrow more money. Thomas Robert Young (born 27 July 2000) is a British Paralympic athlete who competes in sprinting events at international events, he is a Paralympic Games gold medallist, three-time European champion and a two-time World silver medalist. Career At the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships, he won silver in the T38 100 metres. He won the gold medal in the men's 100 metres T38 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Thomas M. Machlay (born July 9, 1947), better known by the ring name Tommy Young, is an American retired professional wrestling referee and professional wrestler. He is best known for his appearances with Jim Crockett Promotions. Career Tommy Young started out as a wrestler in 1971 for Ed Farhat in Michigan and later as a referee in Pedro Martínez's National Wrestling Federation. In 1975, he worked for the National Wrestling Alliance and Jim Crockett Promotions as a referee. Thomas Young (born 3 May 1991) is a British Paralympic swimmer. He represented Britain at the 2012 London Paralympics and has won medals at both the long course and short course World Championships. Personal history Young was born in Lancaster, England in 1991. He was born without a right hand and forearm and two club feet. Swimming career Young was introduced to swimming at the age of five by his mother, who wanted him to be able to swim as he became older. He began competing at the age of 12 and was subsequently classified as a S8 disability swimmer.
